Saving Favorites and Notes
Saving Notes (OS4)
- 1. OS4 - Using iTunes File Sharing

- OS4 has a cool feature called File Sharing which allows apps to sync with iTunes to transfer data back and forth. iBird takes advantage of this to capture your Favorites and Notes in text files whenever its connected to your PC. You can then save these files in folders for backup. You can also modify your Favorites and Notes, drag those files back to iTunes and the next time you sync iBird they will update iBird with the new information or new files.
If you are using an OS3 device you won't be able to sync your Notes but you can use the "Email Notes" feature to send them to yourself via email.
- 2. iTunes File Sharing Page

- So lets assume that you have written a few iBird Notes and assigned a few birds as Favorites. Connect your device to the computer and open iTunes. Click on your device's name in iTune's left column menu area. Find the App tap at the top of the iTunes screen and click it.
- 3. iTunes File Sharing Page

- At the bottom of the iTunes screen you will see the File Sharing Apps list on the left. Here any app on your iPhone/iPad/iPad that shares files will appear as a small icon. To see the files that are shared click on the icon.
- 4. iTunes File Sharing Documents

- To the immediate right of the File Sharing list are the documents for the selected app. In this example we clicked on the iBird PRO icon and the default favorite list document appeared (fav.Favorites.txt) and the single Note document (note.Abert's Towhee.txt).
- 5. Make American Goldfinch Note

- Make a Note for the American Goldfinch by tapping the Note icon on the slider button. Connect your device to iTunes and take another look at the iBird documents list.
- 6. Save American Goldfinch Note

- Now you should see your Note - they are of the form "note.common name.txt" so in this case its note.American Goldfinch.txt. You can now select the Note and click the Save to... button and save it in a folder on your computer. Or you can drag it to your computer's desktop or a folder.
Conversely if you have a Note on your computer you would like to add to iBird, simple click the Add.. button, find your Note and select it. It will then appear in the iBird documents list and will be immediately transferred to iBird -- you don't need to click the Sync button. That's all there is to saving and adding Notes.
Saving Favorites (OS4)
- 1. Star the Acorn Woodpecker

- Assuming you have read the lesson on making a favorite, find the Acorn Woodpecker and "star" it so its added to the default Favorites list.
